Fairfax County Abortion Scandal Grows as Concerns Reach Members of the United State Senate.
News broke today that U.S Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) who is also Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee has demanded answers to the Committee’s questions regarding the story arising out of a Fairfax, Virginia high school. Staff at Centerville High School may have urged—and facilitated—abortions for minor girls and the same staff may have used federal or state funds inappropriately to pay for the abortions.
The Virginia State Police are already investigating the whistleblower’s account that the abortions happened without notifying the parents or guardians of the girls, which is against the law in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
“VSHL is grateful that Sen. Cassidy has called for clarity from FCPS regarding this matter. Virginia has a parental consent law because we know that minors are vulnerable to manipulation and fear when facing a teen pregnancy. They need their parents at such a time. Sadly, we also know that there are individuals with other agendas willing to skirt the law and put young mothers in harm’s way,” said Olivia Gans Turner, President of Virginia Society for Human Life. “The possibility that school staff may have misused federal funds in this case is a serious situation and must be pursued.”
Sen. Cassidy has sent a detailed letter to FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid asking for answers to multiple questions about Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) policy and actions they may have taken at the time of the alleged abortions. Fairfax County Public Schools do receive federal funds and as such are required to abide by federal rules regarding the use of those same funds. Paying for a student’s abortion is a misuse of those funds under federal law.
Virginia has statewide elections this fall that will help determine whether or not parents’ rights will be protected going forward. This story only highlights the need to elect individuals who will safeguard those rights.
Virginia Society for Human Life is the oldest state-wide pro-life organization in the nation with chapters throughout the Commonwealth supporting life issues and the Virginia affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee.
