Virginia Loses 4 pro-life seats in Congress after Passage of the Extreme Gerrymandering vote

RICHMOND, VA –The results of the redistricting amendment vote on Tuesday stripped away the voices of
thousands of Virginians who supported pro-life representatives in 4 of the current districts. The new map will
eliminate districts 1, 2 5, and 6 all seats currently held by pro-life Republicans. The final vote was close;
pointing to a sharp divide in the public of Virginia.

“The loss of these voices in the House of Representatives will be a devastating blow, not only to Virginia, but to
the rest of America. They have been critical during votes in Washington that respect the right to life and the will
of Americans who oppose unlimited abortion practices,” said Olivia Gans Turner, president of VSHL.
“It is especially troubling that the loss of their votes could lead to allowing the use of our tax dollars to pay for
abortions under government funding programs. Losing the Hyde Amendment rules will lead to thousands more
federally funded abortions,” said Turner.

The months of ads claiming that Virginia’s congressional districts were unfair confused and the language of the
ballot question deliberately misled many voters. Now the matter may still face challenges in the Courts.
Despite the outcome of the ballot vote VSHL will continue to support pro-life candidates from either party.
VSHL is even hopeful that Virginia may even see the rise of new pro-life Democrats in the redrawn districts.
