Senator Lindsey Graham and Congressman Chris Smith Reintroduce the Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act
Following the recent Supreme Court Ruling reversing Roe v. Wade, new pro-life action in the U.S. Congress has been championed by two leading pro-life members, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ). Together, they have reintroduced the Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act, which would protect unborn children at 15 weeks, a point by which science shows that the unborn child is capable of experiencing great pain when killed by dismemberment or other late term abortion methods.
In a Fox News poll conducted April 28-May 1, 2022, respondents were asked, “And what about a law banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy, except in the case of medical emergency – would you favor or oppose that in your state.” Of those responding, 54% favored such a law and only 41% opposed it.
“Pro-life Virginians are pleased that this important and life-saving legislation will once more be brought forward and hopefully now may finally get a proper hearing in Congress. This bill deserves a true debate and a chance for our elected officials to vote on providing pain capable unborn children with rational protection under the law,” said Olivia Gans Turner, Virginia Society for Human Life (VSHL) President. “This bill is similar to bills that have been repeatedly introduced in the Virginia General Assembly and denied a hearing by pro-abortion members there. Governor Youngkin is in favor of a bill in Virginia that will protect unborn babies capable of feeling pain in the womb.”
“We commend pro-life Senator Lindsey Graham and pro-life Congressman Chris Smith for their untiring efforts and dedication on behalf of unborn children and their mothers,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “The Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act would prevent cruel and painful abortions from being performed on innocent children.”
“In contrast, pro-abortion Democrats are pushing for unlimited abortion for any reason throughout pregnancy and using tax dollars to pay for abortion. In fact, the only thing the Democrats are offering the American people in this campaign is an opportunity to kill more and more children by abortion,” Tobias continued. “President Biden and the entire Democratic Party are pouring more effort into promoting and expanding abortion than on addressing any of the critical issues facing Americans today.”
