Are Fairfax County High Schools Paying for Student Abortions?

Alarm bells are going off again for parents in Fairfax County, Virginia. A report has emerged concerning activities at certain high schools in Fairfax County involving school staff members urging minor girls to get abortions without informing parents. Virginia law currently requires parental consent unless the teenager appeals for a judicial bypass. The details of the stories involved are still somewhat unclear, but they do raise alarming questions about how parents are possibly being pushed out of these critical life decisions for their underage daughters. VSHL is waiting to find further clarification and confirmation of the stories that are hitting the media now. We will stay on top of any developments.

Regardless of the facts behind these reports, all Virginians need to be aware that while we currently have a law that protects parents’ rights to be involved in any pregnancy decisions their daughters make, that law will be under serious threat if the proposed State Constitutional Amendment that will make unregulated abortions possible through all nine months of pregnancy becomes law next year. The House of Delegates elections this fall will determine whether that happens. Virginians need to ask candidates where they stand on ensuring that the rights of parents to protect their minor aged daughters are safeguarded—not eliminated.

“It is vitally important for parents and all concerned Virginians to understand that tragically there are individuals who support unlimited abortion and are willing to erode the rights of parents to provide their children with much needed support when facing a pregnancy,” said Olivia Gans Turner President of VSHL, “This is not a right parents can take for granted in this climate. We must vote to protect our daughters and our families.”
