Pro-Life $20,000 Challenge Grant

Immediate Response Needed

Every Donation will be Matched Dollar-for-Dollar

The Virginia Society for Human Life (VSHL) has a chance to be handed up to $20,000. That's right twenty thousand dollars!

That's twenty thousand that can -- and will - immediately be put to use in our ongoing efforts to protect and defend the the unborn, those with disabilities or serious illness, and the vulnerable elderly.

A group of loyal VSHL supporters has offered to match dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000 whatever VSHL can raise until December 31st, 2018.

These funds are vital to helping VSHL keep our important pro-life work going strong in 2019.  Planned Parenthood and their pro-abortion allies have launched an all-out assault both in the courts and in the legislature on all of our pro-life laws here in Virginia.  They want to eliminate even the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban and to force taxpayer funding of abortion-on-demand.  They are even trying to resurrect the pro-abortion Equal Rights Amendment to the US Constitution by having Virginia be the 38th state to pass it.  Unfortunately, most voters don't remember the dangers the ERA poses to the unborn so we must increase our education efforts about how the ERA threatens every pro-life law across the country.  Virginia is at ground zero of these efforts.  Our Youth education programs include the annual Oratory Contest and Camp Joshua, our pro-life camp for Virginia teens.

Which is why we absolutely must meet this deadline to ensure we receive the full $20,000 Matching Fund.

So please make your donation today to either VSHL Legislative Fund

or the VSHL Education Fund (tax-deductible). Click on one of the buttons below to donate online or mail your check  payable to either VSHL or VSHL Education Fund (tax-deductible) to VSHL 6767 Forest Hill Ave, Suite 304 Richmond, VA 23225.

Friends,

In recent weeks there have been a series of news articles and commentary about renewed efforts around the Commonwealth to resurrect the long-defeated so-called Equal Rights Amendment.
These commentaries suggest that there is a ground swell of support for this questionable endeavor, when in fact the support is coming from well-organized forces, including the pro-abortion groups NARAL and Planned Parenthood.  What all of them have failed to share with the public is the very real connection between the ERA and abortion!

VSHL was on the front lines opposing the original ERA effort in the 1970’s.  Legal experts then and now continue to share their alarm that the ERA does pose a very serious threat to pro-life laws. A recent case from New Mexico proves that there is grave reason to be concerned.

Let me be clear:  while VSHL does not take a position on the merits of the ERA itself, we have a longstanding position opposing the ERA unless there is a neutralizing amendment attached that will ensure that the ERA could not be used to dismantle existing pro-life laws, prevent new ones, or require the use of taxpayer funds to pay for abortions.

This link (https://vshl.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f2564974ed493b8ba9fc4e85a&id=211573645a&e=2292397a14) is a good simple analysis of the objections VSHL and NRLC have with the current version of the ERA.  This suggested amendment, developed by National Right to Life years ago, has been opposed by advocates for the ERA across the country and the federal level.  In recent years, states that have passed the ERA have seen their law challenged and some have been forced to pay for abortions. Access to abortion has been defined as a right and pro-life laws as a hindrance to the application on equal rights.  Under the ERA, only unborn girls and boys are to be discriminated against.

There have been several efforts to gain support at the local level from County Boards of Supervisors.  At this date some have voted to support the ERA, but thanks to alert local citizens in one county, Prince William, the motion to support the ERA was defeated.

Find out if your county or city has endorsed the ERA at this link (https://vshl.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f2564974ed493b8ba9fc4e85a&id=eb52e1f5a0&e=2292397a14) .  If your county has not yet endorsed a motion on the ERA there is still time to make your voice heard!
VSHL needs your help to prevent more counties from voting at the local level to show support for the unamended ERA.  Please ask your county supervisors if they have been approached to support the ERA.  Then let VSHL know what you have been told.  Ask them to oppose any such vote of support in your county.

Another critical action that you can take right now is to contact your own Delegate and State Senator to ask them to oppose the ERA if it comes up during the 2019 General Assembly session. Please ask them to make sure that this does not move forward unless the abortion-neutralizing language has been added.

Ask your representatives to oppose the ERA unless the following language is added:  “Nothing in this article [the ERA] shall be construed to grant, secure, or deny any right relating to abortion or the funding thereof.”

Delegates (https://vshl.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f2564974ed493b8ba9fc4e85a&id=381a805b2a&e=2292397a14)
Senators (https://vshl.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f2564974ed493b8ba9fc4e85a&id=058c50b207&e=2292397a14)

Remember, VSHL will have to do a great deal of education to help our neighbors and friends, as well as lobbying our legislators, understand the threat in the ERA. Please help us do that by sending a donation today. Thank you.

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, staff and volunteers at VSHL, I want to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving. May you be surrounded by loved ones and enjoy the festivities of the day.
There is so much to be thankful this year. Pro-lifers continue to advance the cause of life on many fronts, here in our state and nationally.  Lives are being saved and protected from abortion, and from threats of assisted suicide and removal of life-sustaining treatment right here in the Commonwealth.  Efforts to advance the pro-abortion agenda were successfully stopped in the General Assembly last winter.  Abortions continue to drop in Virginia thanks to protective pro-life laws. The proposition to introduce assisted suicide was rejected by members of the JCHC earlier this month.  And just this week the proposal to endorse the pro-abortion ERA in Prince William County failed due to public outcry. Pro-life values are on a roll!

Personally, I want to tell you how thankful I am for the support you give VSHL.  When VSHL asks you to step up and show our strength either with elected officials or on public occasions you are there.  I cannot stress how important that is. We, you and I, are the voices of the unborn and other vulnerable lives. They depend on our active involvement. The vote in PWC proves that very clearly. It was the power of the people in action!

So, as the pies come out of the oven and the football games go on, please remember the lives that depend on us everyday to stand up and fight for life. We are thankful for the gift of every human life. VSHL will continue to be the force for good at the General Assembly and everywhere that life is threatened.
Thank you, dear friends, today and always.

Update on the ERA motion in Prince William County

The motion, introduce by Supervisor Principi, failed for lack of a second. The majority of the Board of Supervisors agreed that this was not an appropriate matter to be handled by the county. It is a matter for the General Assembly.

VSHL's position is, that unless abortion-neutralizing language is put on the ERA, it is not safe and will threaten pro-life laws and force the use of Virginia tax dollars to pay for abortion, as has happened in other states.

During two hours of testimony, 35 people spoke in opposition to the ERA, and 24 in support. The voice of the community made a deep impact on the Board members.  Several of them spoke to the effect that calls and emails, along with the thoughtful testimonies pointing out the dangers in the current ERA, had on their decision not to support the ERA at this time.

Be aware that this ERA train is making its way around Virginia. Hopefully, it will receive a similar response whereever it goes next. Be alert in your own community. Contact VSHL if you hear that plans are being made to attempt this where you live.
Giving Tuesday notice!

VSHL will be participating in the Facebook Giving Tuesday project on Nov. 27. We invite all of you who are on Facebook to participate. To help VSHL please go to the Virginia Society for Human Life Facebook page on that day and make any donation you’d like to raise funds for VSHL’s educational efforts in the months ahead. Please share the link with your pro-life friends. Even a small donation helps! Thank you.

Friends,

Election nights are always challenging for pro-lifers. This year was no exception. We understand that elections have consequences. Lives really do hang in the balance.
As Wednesday morning rolled around it was clear that Virginians had lost three key Congressional races and that one of the state's two pro-abortion Senators was elected again.

There is positive news as well, as two new pro-life candidates were elected in the two open seats and two of Virginia’s most faithful pro-life representatives won re-election.

Congratulations to Congressmen Rob Wittman (1st District) and Morgan Griffith (9th District) on being re-elected as pro-life members of Congress.

Congratulations to pro-life Ben Cline (6th District) and Denver Riggleman (5th District) on being elected to serve in Congress.

Sadly, pro-life Congresswoman Barbara Comstock has lost her race for the 10th District to pro-abortion State Senator Jennifer Wexton.  Congressmen Dave Brat (7th) and Scott Taylor (2nd) also lost to their pro-abortion opponents. Both were close races.  In the 7^th District, pro-abortion Abigail Spanberger defeated Rep. Brat.  In the 2^nd District Rep. Taylor was defeated by another pro-abortion woman, Elaine Luria.

All three of the Congressional races where pro-lifers lost had been special targets of pro-abortion forces and other special interest groups, who poured money into the districts to get pro-abortion candidates elected. Sadly, they were successful.  While many factors were involved in those losses, there is no doubt that pro-abortion groups will be happy.

Virginia Society for Human Life is very grateful to all three of these out-going representatives and their time of steadfast service to protect the unborn. They will be sorely missed.
While it is very sad to see solid pro-life candidates defeated this year, there is good news from the 8th District House of Delegates District special election: pro-life Joe McNamara has won. He will help hold the pro-life balance in the General Assembly.

Now we need to gear up for the two special elections for Delegate Cline's and Senator Wexton's seats before the 2019 General Assembly. We have a chance to add to the pro-life vote in the Virginia State Senate and once more we must hold on to the one-vote pro-life majority in the House of Delegates.

Here in Virginia it’s always election season and so it is again. Please help VSHL get out the word regarding these two upcoming special elections when they are announced.  VSHL PAC will make endorsements and will send you information as it becomes available. Thank you.
Thank you also to everyone who shared information about this election with family and friends. Thank you for voting pro-life as well! You are an indispensable part of the pro-life team in Virginia.
Richmond Legislative Update

The final meeting of 2018 for the Virginia Joint Commission on Health Care (JCHC) took place on the morning after election day in Richmond. The good news is that after two years of debate about how to craft a legislative proposal to legalize doctor-prescribed death in Virginia, the Commission voted to protect our law preventing assisted suicide.

The Commission members voted to "take no action" which was the pro-life vote. The motion passed by one vote, along party lines except for JCHC Chair Democratic Sen. Rosalyn Dance voting with the Republican members. Co-chair Del. Scott Garrett, a physician himself, spoke with great passion to the value of each life and the grave danger of introducing the power to end lives by physician-assisted suicide into society. Thank you to all the members who voted to protect life in the meeting.

Special thanks to Congressman-elect Ben Cline, who made the extra special effort to attend Wednesday's meeting the morning after his election to Congress, just to make voting for life his last official act as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates.  Thank you!
Olivia Gans Turner and VSHL Office Manager Maggie Disney with Congressman-elect Ben Cline
On a special note to all of you, VSHL would like to thank those of you who took the time to send messages to the JCHC expressing your thoughts in opposition to expanding access to assisted suicide in the Commonwealth.  It had real impact.  The JCHC received close to 3,000 messages opposing assisted suicide and only 368 in favor of legalizing it.
VSHL also appreciated the cooperative support from various disabilities rights groups, who recognized the threat inherent in this proposal.
As we wind down the year, please keep VSHL in your plans for giving.  Your support is essential to the work we do across Virginia.  We are deeply aware that you make VSHL strong. Thank you.

Friends,

In just a few days we will once again be able to cast a vote to save unborn children from cruel and violent death by abortion.  Who you vote for on Tuesday, November 6 will make a difference in what laws can be protected and new ones can be passed, both at the federal and state level!

All of Virginia’s Congressional seats are in play as well as one of our US Senator’s seat.  Virginia has a strong pro-life delegation to Washington DC.  Out of our 11 congressional districts, we have been represented by 7 pro-life Representatives. We must not let pro-abortion forces replace any of those seats with pro-abortion individuals. Your Votes can prevent that from happening.

Last year Virginians proved to the country just how important one vote can be. The race for the control of the Virginia House of Delegates was decided by exactly one vote! Now this November we must hold on to pro-life control in the House. There is a special race in the 8th district, Salem-Roanoke area, which will once again decide the control of Virginia’s House of Delegates. This race will also decide if VSHL can protect the strong prolife laws that we have worked so hard to gain over the years. Pro-life Joe McNamara has been endorsed in that race by the VSHLPAC. If you have friends or family in that district, please make sure they get to the polls on Tuesday.

Below you will see a list of the Congressional candidates endorsed by VSHLPAC this year.  Please share it with your friends and family.

Thank you for helping VSHL get out the pro-life vote.  We can’t do this without you!

Sincerely,

Olivia Gans Turner

Contact Your Delegate and Senator Today.

There will still be a very slim pro-life majority in both houses, a one vote majority in fact. Nobody

should take these votes for granted. Each bill will mean a fight.  Links to find your Senator or Delegate and their contact information are below.

Please contact your Senator and Delegate to let them know you want them to oppose taxpayer funding of abortion and to oppose any efforts to repeal or weaken pro-life laws like the Women's-Right-to-Know and protections for the sick and disabled.

November 8, 2017

The Virginia Society for Human Life is saddened by the losses yesterday in the statewide races. The three great pro-life leaders–Ed Gillespie, who ran for governor, Jill Vogel, who ran for Lt. Governor, and Attorney General candidate John Adams–ran strong races and were prepared to do all that they could to protect innocent human life from fertilization to natural death.

VSHL is aware that Governor-elect Ralph Northam and returning incumbent Attorney General, Mark Herring are equally committed to expanding the abortion agenda in Virginia. It can be assumed that together with pro-abortion Lt. Governor -elect Justin Fairfax, they will work to dismantle every pro-life law in Virginia. Pro-life Virginians have reason to be worried.

“It’s simple,” said Olivia Gans Turner, President of VSHL. “When Planned Parenthood celebrates, it means more unborn babies are going to die and more mothers will be left in pain for a lifetime. The millions of dollars they poured into this race paid off and innocent lives will suffer as a result.”

Gans Turner added, “VSHL wishes to extend our congratulations to every pro-life candidate that won Tuesday. May you remain steadfast to your commitment to protect innocent human life regardless of the upcoming challenges. Pro-life voters are grateful.”

There were a few very tight races whose outcomes may not be decided for a day or two. VSHL will wait to respond to the final head count in the House of Delegates until they are resolved, hoping that the House will remain held by pro-life Republicans.

The next four years will call upon the deepest commitment of pro-life people in the Commonwealth to defend the protection of unborn children, those living with disabilities and the vulnerable elderly from life threatening activity in Virginia. We must work together to prevent the advancement of new pro-abortion legislation by a pro-abortion governor and a House of Delegates with decidedly more pro-abortionists.

Today, Governor McAuliffe has vetoed a common sense bill that would have ensured that legitimate Virginia healthcare programs that do not perform or promote abortion received priority state funding before any organization that does abortions.

This bill, HB-2264, patroned by Delegates Ben Cline and Dave LaRock, was designed to support state programs that actually do provide women with prenatal care and other much need health services under Medicaid and to get the Commonwealth of Virginia out of the business of abortion. Sadly, once again we see that the Governor's commitment to his pro-abortion political backers takes precedence over the will of the people of Virginia who do not want their taxes paying to support abortions or abortion promoters like Planned Parenthood.

Growing evidence suggests that the only thing that the women of Virginia can find at these abortion facilities is an abortion. None of Planned Parenthood's Virginia locations offer prenatal care.

Virginia Society for Human Life is not surprised that Terry McAuliffe has sided with his pro-abortion allies.

"He has proven for the last four years that Planned Parenthood and the abortion lobby can depend on him to abandon the women and unborn children of the Commonwealth every time," said Olivia Gans Turner, President of Virginia Society for Human Life. "Now he is proving that he does not care that Virginians do not want our taxes paying for abortion either. This is solid evidence that Virginia needs a pro-life governor to respect the action of Virginia's elected officials and the will of the people of this state."

Friends,

This week at the General Assembly, it was decided by the Chairman of the House Courts of Justice Committee to lay aside the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection bill, HB-1473 due to fears that the bill would not be able to successfully survive a possible challenge in the Virginia Senate and an absolutely certain veto by pro-abortion Governor McAuliffe.

There is great optimism that the bill will be able to pass out of the General Assembly without significant or weakening amendments next year. The real hope is that there will also be a pro-life governor elected this November who will sign it into law, so that Virginia can be counted among those states that are currently protecting helpless unborn children capable of feeling pain from a horrific death by abortion.

VSHL remains committed to working closely with pro-life legislators at the General Assembly to move this bill forward in the very near future.  Please remember to thank your legislator if he or she signed on as a co-patron this session. If not, please make it your duty to ask for their support next year.

It is essential that we all keep talking to neighbors, family and friends about this life saving bill which will protect some of the most vulnerable among us. There is more info on the VSHL website and our Facebook page.

Please help VSHL spread the word.

Thank you all,

This is it!

The 2017 Virginia General Assembly gets underway tomorrow.  This year is a "short session" due to the election year, so we have a very tight window, only 45 days, to try and get things done to save unborn babies!

Have you contacted your Delegate and Senator yet to ask for their support of HB 1473, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act?

One of the most important things they can do to help move this bill forward successfully this year is to become a co-patron of the bill.  They may not do so if they don't think you support this bill too!

Yes, it is true that Virginia's current outspoken pro-abortion governor has made  it very clear that he intends to veto this and any other pro-life legislation that might get to his desk. Well let's call him on it!

In a poll taken on election night it became obvious that there is a powerful majority in favor of legislation like this that can protect the lives of babies old enough to feel pain in the womb by 20 weeks. Gov. McAuliffe is out of step with 64% of Americans who support this kind of law, as well as 74% of millennials, 67% of women, 70% of Black Americans and 57% of Hispanic voters.

Let's make sure our voices are added to that support at the General Assembly this week.

It is so easy for you to connect with your legislators.  Please use this link  to find yours and email them or place a quick call.  Each call is counted and they do matter!

Please remember that you can support the work of VSHL lobbying team as well by making a donation to the Legislative fund. We are so grateful for you continued help! you can make a donation here.

Let's make our voices heard loud and clear that we want to see stronger life saving laws like HB 1473 passed! Let's work together and move this game-changing legislation one step closer to being signed into law!

Thank you,
Olivia Gans Turner
President, Virginia Society for Human Life

Let's send a clear message to McAuliffe & Northam!

 Pro-life Virginians,

Do you know how pro-abortion Virginia's Lt. Governor, Ralph Northam is?  Well, he just made public comments opposing the latest version of the Pain Capable Unborn Child Act which was just signed in to law in Ohio!

Apparently, he has no compassion for the helpless little unborn children who suffer the horrific death cause by abortion.  Lt. Gov. Northam is using is position to generate opposition in Virginia to efforts of pro-life legislators to pass this protective law. His comments to a Virginia Democratic group are full of typical fear mongering and false narratives regarding this legislation.

Why you ask?  Well, looking at his perfect pro-abortion voting record while in the Virginia Senate it is clear that he is in the pocket of the abortion industry, just like Gov. McAuliffe! Together they will work harder than ever to prevent this important bill from passing in the General Assembly during the 2017 session.

This reasonable bill has already successfully enacted in 15 states. Unborn babies lives are being saved in those states and it is time for Virginia to see this happen here. By 20 weeks in the womb, medical science can measure the pain that the unborn can feel. The unborn's ability pain is so highly sensitive that what they feel is profoundly more excruciating that what you and I feel, yet, abortionists claim this science is bogus.  These laws cut into the abortion industry's profit and so they and their lackey's in the General Assembly will oppose this bill with all their might.

Won't you please help us hold strong against these attacks?

It is vitally important that our Delegates and Senators hear from us ASAP!

The 2017 General Assembly will begin on January 11, 2017. Del. LaRock, (R-33) has submitted the new bill.  It is so important that our legislators show their support for this bill, HB-1473. They can do that best by becoming a co-patron. Your phone calls and emails right now will show them that there is public support for the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act here in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Pro-abortion forces are already contacting the Members' offices. I know it's Christmas time but we must do all that we can right away to make sure that our elected officials don't think we want them to sit out another session because of pro-abortion opposition. Let's ask them to send a clear message to pro-abortion Lt. Governor Northam and Gov. McAuliffe that they can't stop pro-life laws by making speeches and threatening vetoes.

It only take a couple of minutes to send and email or call an leave a message.  You can use this link to help you find the information you need to contact your legislators today!

Remember, it will take a great deal to communicate with the public about this bill. Your contributions now help VSHL do the hard work needed in Richmond and around Virginia.

Thank you and many hopes for you and yours at this season!

New Bill in General Assembly

Protects Unborn Babies Who Can Feel Pain from Abortion

Yesterday, on the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, the Virginia Society for Human Life announced that the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (HB2321) has been introduced by Del. David A. LaRock (R-33) into this year’s General Assembly.

This important bill will prevent abortions in Virginia after the point in pregnancy when medical science has determined that an unborn child can feel pain. These unborn babies should be protected under the law from the excruciating pain caused by abortion.

Delegate Dave LaRock (R-33) with VSHL Lobbyist Maggie Disney and VSHL volunteer Susan Smith during annual rose delivery on January 22nd.

Pro-life Virginians have done so much to move this Commonwealth to becoming one that respects and saves even the smallest and most vulnerable lives. Recent Virginia statistics indicate that abortion rates are coming down. Many of those numbers reflect the effect of the reasonable and protective laws we have seen passed in the General Assembly.

We continue to face new challenges to ensure that innocent lives are once again protected under the law. Unborn children and their mothers are still threatened by aggressive and dangerous abortion promoters throughout Virginia.

“The passage of the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act will save these precious unborn babies from a horrific death at the hands of abortionists. It is the humane thing to do,” said Olivia Gans Turner.

Mark Herring puts abortion agenda over duty to rape victims

The Attorney General of Virginia, Mark Herring, has issued a deeply disturbing decision regarding the responsibility of Virginia abortion facility staff to report incidents of the rape of a minor age girl before performing an abortion on these young victims.

“This alarming decision on the part of the highest law enforcement official of the Commonwealth of Virginia proves without a doubt that elections have serious consequences. Attorney General Herring had a long record in the Virginia Senate of supporting abortion providers over the need to protect women and their unborn children. Now Virginians see that as Attorney General, he will continue to serve the interests of the abortion industry and those who commit acts of violence upon young girls.” said Olivia Gans Turner, VSHL President.

The decision, which was released two days before the last Virginia Board of Health meeting in September, rejects two previous decisions of prior Virginia Attorneys General that recognized the need to protect minors from sexual predators by reporting rape to the authorities.

Abortion promoters, such as Planned Parenthood, have a record of ignoring regulations like these and will continue to do so as long as pro-abortion elected officials continue to turn a blind eye. This is the real war on women!

The upcoming elections provide Virginians with the opportunity to make it clear that we do not appreciate pro-abortion politicians serving as cronies of the abortion industry. “It is vitally important that all Virginians know which candidates are pro-life and vote for them on Nov. 4th!.” Gans Turner added.
